S.A. MADISON CAPTURES GIRLS STATE BOWLING CROWN

 

The San Antonio Madison Lady Mavericks captured their first ever state bowling title with a thrilling 2-1 victory over the Alvin Lady Yellowjackets at Copperfield Bowl in Houston.  Madison ran away with the first game 225-150.  But Alvin wasn’t done.  They took a 171-125 victory in game 2, setting up a 1 game match for the title.  Alvin started strong marking in the first 6 frames and led 125-114 through 7 fames.  But Madison came back, striking in the 8th and 9th and marking in the 10th while taking advantage of a costly 10-pin miss in the 9th by Alvin.  The Lady Mavericks prevailed 180-173 for the title.  Madison went into the match play round as the #3 seed behind Allen and Plano East.  In their first match, they shut out Spring 2-0 (172-135, 155-150), then took #6 Richardson Berkner 2-0 (190-187, 167-142).  In the semifinals, they dispatched #2 seed Plano East 2-1 (148-184, 223-125, 243-162) to set up the final with Alvin.  The Yellowjackets, seeded #5, dispatched #12 Texas City2-0 (175-117, 146-127) and upset #4 seed Plano West 2-1( 148-153, 168-135, 167-147) in the quarterfinals and #1 seed Allen in the semifinals 2-1 (221-207, 131-181, 181-172) to reach the final.

Jessica McCusker of Allen rolled a 300 game in the final qualifying game, the first girl to roll in perfect game in the Texas High School Bowling Club state tournament.

 

 

DENTON’S GEOFFREY YOUNG TAKES BOYS SINGLES TITLES

 

Geoffrey Young of Denton captured the 2008 boys singles title topping Keller Central’s Patrick Adams 230-190.  Young, a senior bowling in his last state tournament, was seeded #12 after qualifying.  In the first match he topped #5 John Vorpahl of San Antonio MacArthur 200-243, 212-204, 234-202.  In the quarterfinals, he shutout Terrance McQueen of Fort Bend Marshall 213-149, 226-207, then edged Killeen Ellison’s Angel Morales 235-225 to reach the final.  Adams, the #6 seed, defeated #11 Eduardo Cortez of Katy 211-183, 192-208, 221-172.  In the quarterfinals, he upset the #3 seed and defending state champion Anthony Lavery 224-228, 234-191, 211-152, then held on to beat #7 seed Donald James of Harker Heights (Killeen) 227-214.

34 of the 61 entrants averaged over 200 in the qualifying round, the highest scoring tournament to date.

 

The tournament will conclude tomorrow with boys team and girls singles championships.
